The social reform movement as has been depicted by Archibald Macbriar was one aimed at fighting for a better society in which people lived in tranquility with one another and that no one was perceived to be superior to other people in his or her surroundings. This was such that even with the differences that subsisted between different groups of people concerning individuals’ cultural practices, geographical locations, and people’s races. The social reform movements helped individuals to learn that in as much as individuals in the society could perceive other people as different from them to truth was that they could attain several benefits from the people they thought to be different from them. For instance, individuals had diverse talents that they could put to play in benefiting other people in their surroundings and their societies as a whole. Those who were good at creating different pieces of art would always develop art for the primary purpose of helping other people in their societies enjoy the art pieces they created. Similarly, the people who were good in issues to do with politics vied for different positions of office for the main purpose of ensuring that they attained different positions of office in their government so that they could provide guidance to other people within their areas of jurisdiction. Therefore, the social reform movements helped in reminding people that all people in the society had an important role to play even with the slight differences that were present between different groups of people. In cases whereby people were united at different points in their lives, individuals were able to accomplish things they would not have been able to if it happened that they decided to on their own or solo.
One of the primary reasons behind the spread of social reform movements as portrayed by the artist in his picture was so that people could come together in their efforts to fight for the rights of minority groups within the society. It was believed that when individuals worked together they stood a better chance of effecting change more so when it comes to fighting for equality of all human beings. Furthermore, the gatherings that were organized through the social reform movements played a crucial role in assisting individuals come up with suggestions concerning the strategies that could be implemented in the society to enhance operations in the society or at least enact changes in the society that would improve individuals’ living standards. This was regardless of the localities from where the attendees originated from at different periods the gatherings were held. Most of all, the social reform movements reminded people that they were not in any way inferior to other groups of people in their surroundings. In fact, individuals who became part of the social reform movements were inspired to always strive for a better society in which people were valued for the important roles they played in the society and for the mere fact that they were human beings who deserved to be treated with utmost respect.
The social reform movements as depicted in the picture helped in bringing people from different walks of life together so that they could work through some of the predicaments they encountered in their societies. These social reform movements helped individuals learn about some of the things they were entitled to in their societies yet they were deprived such as individuals’ right to use various public facilities in their surroundings. Subsequently, individuals were informed of the fact that they could appeal to their government and authorities within their areas of residence to effect varied changes they desired using different strategies such as using representatives to inform authorities within their areas of residence about the predicaments that people in the regions they represented faced. Also, the representatives could organize meetings held between authorities concerned with the welfare of the inhabitants of the regions they represented and the inhabitants of the particular regions government authorities represented. Consequentially, natives from distinctive communities could air out their grievances in the gatherings by engaging in one on one exchanges with their leaders or the people they voted into the government to help them out with their problems.
It is no doubt that Americans are divided amongst themselves due to the divergent political ideologies upheld by different groups of people in America. However, the conflicting political ideologies that individuals supported in various points in their lives led to geographical divisions among the various residents of the United States. For instance, there were regions in the United States that supported the policies of the Democratic Party as opposed to the policies upheld by the Republican Party and vice versa. It was precisely for the aforementioned reasons and more that during times of election there were particular proportions of the United States that voted for the candidates who were from the Republican Party while other segments of the United States voted for the candidates who vied for different positions of office under the emblem of the Democratic Party. However, even with the political differences that subsisted between different groups of people in the United States, at the end of the day, all persons of the United States considered themselves America citizens who were united under the reign of a single government.
One factor that clearly indicates the enormous political drift that subsists between different regions in the United States is the increased level of contempt that partisans expressed for their opponents or for the people who expressed political viewpoints that were contrary to the political opinions of their own. Further, it has been stipulated that close to 4 of every 10 Republicans and Democrats proclaimed that the policies upheld by their political opponents were in one way or another misguided and posed a huge threat to the wellbeing of the entire nation of the United States. Subsequently, the Democrats thought that they were the people befitted to assume different positions of office in their government while the Republicans also thought that they were the people best fitted for the job of leading the United States to a point of increased development or progress. Nonetheless, the decision concerning the party that was bound to take office lied in the hands of the citizens of the United States when they were called to vote in different candidates into dissimilar positions of office.
However, people from different races for instance Blacks and Whites had different perspectives concerning some of the events that occurred in reality. As such, it could be proclaimed that both whites and blacks lived in different realities just in the same way that there were certain regions occupied by the majority of black people and other localities in which the highest number of occupants were white people. Research has indicated that African Americans, unlike the whites, were more likely to object the decision that was made by the grand jury concerning the indictment of police officers concerning the death of Michael Brown and Erick Garner. Accordingly, African Americans were more likely to disapprove the not guilty verdict that was issued to George Zimmerman concerning the demise of Trayvon Martin. In addition, given the fact that most Blacks believed that White people perceived them as the inferior group a majority of African Americans showed contempt against the Whites they came across in their areas of residence. This was such that most Blacks did not believe genuine concern and generosity they were shown by other people in their surroundings who were from the white race. Most black people thought of such favors as some form of mockery even if the favors were sincere.
Nonetheless, the United States may not have experienced many changes in the early 19th century to mid-19th century as has been proclaimed by some writers because, for the most of the 19th century, most residents of the United States led a quiet type of lifestyle. This was such that a majority of the inhabitants of America relied on farming as their primary economic activity. Agricultural produce was used for subsistence and commercial purposes. Therefore, most people did not have time to organize protests for one reason or another during this period.
Further, for the most of the 19th century, people were more concerned with developing strategies that they could put to play in making sure that they developed a better society for the Americans in generations to come. This was such that as opposed to occurrences in the current society where Americans are more concerned about the events that occurred in their world of politics in the past years individuals were more concerned about coming up with development projects that could serve the best interests of people in their society. For instance, for the most of the nineteenth century, individuals were more apprehensive with developing their own infrastructure, which was quite pathetic at the time including roads and state of the art buildings. Other than the fact that the roads that existed in the earlier of the nineteenth century were rudimentary and rutted, the even that plied different routes at the time were also few thus making individuals’ movement to different parts of the United States both slow and difficult.
In the early 19th century, a majority of the poor members of the society and the children were forced to walk to various destinations of choice. However, the few farmers who had horses and wagons had a means to move around to their places of choice. Nonetheless, most of the luggage that were moved from one place to another relied on the transportation that was provided by the slower moving oxen as opposed to the horses used in moving freight. Consequentially, it was asserted that people who had good horses during the time took approximately four to six days to travel from Boston to New York depending on the state of the weather at the time an individual decided to travel to New York from Boston. If the weather was favorable then the journey was fast and vice versa.
